Albrecht Durer – Observing Nature As a young man in Germany Albrecht Durer () was apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut chief illustrator of the Nuremberg Chronicle. He traveled widely and his work as a painter only exceeded by his ability to engrave on metal. The names of the artists remain obscure. They are believed to be Heinrich Füllmaurer and Albrecht Meyer who drew the plants and Vitus Rodolph Speckle who cut the wood blocks. The illustrations were drawn from nature using mature plants which Fuchs often provided from his garden in Tübingen.
